This has been a subtle annoyance for me for a long time, but I have no idea if that's just me having weird preferences.
I see private messages to be completely seperate from stream messages and thus would be happy to have an overview of all ongoing discussions in streams but not have that cluttered by private message streams. In zulip there is already an own link for "private messages" on the top left, which makes me think that I'm not the only one who thinks that stream and private messages are supposed to be distinguished in the message view.
Another option would be to define "favorite narrows" and a possibility to set them as links in the top-left, so a user could have a link for "all messages from streams, except from stream foo, no private conversations". But I'd strongly prefer the simple exclusion.

thanks for the reply @timabbott
What would, in your mind, be the desired default landing page?
In my opinion it would be pretty much what I described above, a collection of all stream messages that I am subscribed to.
