UPDATE: I have no clue why, but when I run this on the terminal of vs code, it works if I press crtl + f5, but not when I use the start button on the top right of the screen. I think it has something to do with debug mode and normal execution?

armoliss commented Jun 5, 2023

It looks like an issue because of the model directory specified by the model_path variable.

MODEL_PATH=models/ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin

The above is located in the .env file and your model location should be the same unless you want to change it. The easiest way is to create a models folder in the Private GPT folder and store your models there.

for me it didn't fix the issue?
I have changed the MODEL_PATH to this
MODEL_PATH=models/ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin
and I have created a models folder and put the file "ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin " in.
any ideas why?

I kinda brute forced a way to make it work
llm = GPT4All(model=r"C:\this\is\a\path\privateGPT\models\ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin", n_ctx=1000, backend='gptj', callbacks=callbacks, verbose=False)

Hi I have the same error :
(ValidationError: 1 validation error for GPT4All root Unable to instantiate model (type=value_error)) ,

I am using a models folder and an absolute path (pathfolder is the path to my models folder )

model = GPT4All(model=r"pathfolder\models\ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin",n_ctx=1000, backend='gptj', callbacks=callbacks, verbose=False)

Hi all,

got the same error.
it's indeed the wrong path.
I'm using Google Colab so first I set this path wrongly:

then I used this and it fixed the issue:
/content/ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin
(just copy paste the path file from your IDE file explorer)

after fixing this issue now I can see that the file found:
Found model file at /content/models/ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin

llm = GPT4All(model=model_path, n_ctx=1000, backend="gptj", verbose=False)

then new validation error so i figure the API changed and n_ctx=1000 is invalid - i just removed it and it working.

Hi All,

Once model path correctly mentioned in .env file and remove the extra argument(as per API) n_ctx=1000, Its working as expected.

Downgrading some packages could help if none of the above actions solve the issue.

I hit into the same error and googling and reading the reported issue, I deduce as what some other have mentioned here, the path to the gpt4all is likely not loaded. Tried a few things and in the end, I manually added the .env directly into privategpt.py like this

embeddings_model_name = "all-MiniLM-L6-v2" # os.environ.get("EMBEDDINGS_MODEL_NAME")
persist_directory = "db" #os.environ.get('PERSIST_DIRECTORY')

model_type = "GPT4All" #os.environ.get('MODEL_TYPE')
model_path = "models/ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin" #os.environ.get('MODEL_PATH')
model_n_ctx = "1000" #os.environ.get('MODEL_N_CTX')
model_n_batch = 8 #int(os.environ.get('MODEL_N_BATCH',8))
target_source_chunks = 4 #int(os.environ.get('TARGET_SOURCE_CHUNKS',4))

It works for me by adding the variables directly into the privategpt.py file, but I hit into some other different issue which I am debugging.

According to the error message, it seems that the script was able to find the model file at "models/ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin," but encountered an issue while trying to instantiate the model. The specific error is "ValidationError: 1 validation error for the root GPT4All - Unable to instantiate the model (type=value_error)."

This error could be due to misconfiguration or incorrect parameters when creating the GPT4All instance. To resolve this issue, you can follow these steps:

  1. Verify the model_path: Make sure the model_path variable correctly points to the location of the model file "ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin" on your system.

  2. Review the model parameters: Check the parameters used when creating the GPT4All instance. Ensure that max_tokens, backend, n_batch, callbacks, and other necessary parameters are properly configured.

  3. Ensure model compatibility: Verify that the "ggml-gpt4all-j-v1.3-groovy.bin" model is compatible with the version of the GPT4All class you are using.

Remember to validate the configuration and parameters to ensure that the GPT4All instance is initialized correctly. Providing more specific details about lines 38 and 83 in your privateGPT.py script could help in identifying the problem.

I did some investigation for this problem and commented in GPT4All: nomic-ai/gpt4all#866 (comment)

My problems is that my CPU does not support AVX, it took a day for me to find that.

Please check if CPU support AVX and AVX2, otherwise nothing will work 😄

It appears that the Bin file was designed for an earlier iteration of GPT-4-All and is not compatible with the more recent version.
Solution:
pip show gpt4all
pip uninstall gpt4all
pip show gpt4all
pip install gpt4all==0.2.3
If you come across this error with other models, consider attempting to downgrade the module you are currently utilizing.

@Rj1318
yes after downgrading the Python version it loaded the model, the "Invalid model file" issue was resolved.

Now there is another issue debuging that.
The other issue is that the HW does not support the packages required to run the LLM model

Thanks Rj1318. This did the trick for on my intel mac:
Solution:
pip show gpt4all

Hello Guys
I have the same problem and I got 2 different errors

my code:

from langchain.llms import GPT4All
from langchain.prompts import PromptTemplate
from langchain.chains import LLMChain

PATH = "wizardlm-13b-v1.2.Q4_0.gguf" model is in the same dir as my python file
promptTemp = PromptTemplate(input_variables=['action'],
                                template="Complete this task {action}")
llm = GPT4All(model=PATH, verbose=True, temp=0.1, n_predict = 4096, top_p=0.95, top_k=40, n_batch=9, repeat_penalty=1.1)
chain = LLMChain(prompt=promptTemp, llm=llm)

error is in this line llm = GPT4All(model=PATH)

here is the error:

 File "D:\anaconda3\envs\AI\Lib\site-packages\pydantic\v1\main.py", line 341, in __init__
    raise validation_error
pydantic.v1.error_wrappers.ValidationError: 1 validation error for GPT4All
__root__
  Failed to retrieve model (type=value_error)

Another error appears when I did a slight modification which is changing the Path variable from this PATH = "wizardlm-13b-v1.2.Q4_0.gguf" to this PATH = "D:/Text_Generator/wizardlm-13b-v1.2.Q4_0.gguf"

here is the error:

File "D:\anaconda3\envs\AI\Lib\site-packages\pydantic\v1\main.py", line 341, in __init__

pydantic.v1.error_wrappers.ValidationError: 1 validation error for GPT4All
__root__

the model was working yestarday but suddenly I run the same code today it gived me this errors I don't know why I haven't change anything I am disappointed

I had a similar issue when I was trying to embed the data into Chroma in google colab. I opened a new notebook and installed gpt4all and other files, and the same code worked. I think it has to do with the model installation path.

I am trying to use a .gguf model and I get this error File "/root/.pyenv/versions/3.12.2/lib/python3.12/site-packages/langchain/load/serializable.py", line 74, in __init__ super().__init__(**kwargs) File "/root/.pyenv/versions/3.12.2/lib/python3.12/site-packages/pydantic/main.py", line 341, in __init__ raise validation_error pydantic.error_wrappers.ValidationError: 1 validation error for GPT4All __root__ Failed to retrieve model (type=value_error)

If I use the .bin model, it works. But if I change it to a .gguf model, I get that error.

I downloaded the gpt4all-falcon-newbpe-q4_0.gguf from https://gpt4all.io/index.html

Question: Does gpt4all support a .gguf model?
