Running Activities in GRASS

Tangible_Landscape_Dialogue-Operator_View

TL Operator Steps

  1. To ensure each model is properly aligned, make sure the correct model is under the Kinect and click “Align”. The Kinect will project the contours lines for that model. Make sure the contours properly align with the model and adjust the model as needed. Once you are satisfied, click “Align” again. This will end the contour projection.
  2. If the task has a “Calibrate” button (see above figure), press it after making sure the correct model is in place. The button text will change to “Calibrating…”, wait for it to change back to “Calibrate”.
    • See list below for the tasks that have the calibrate button (ones not listed do not have calibrate button):
      • Task 1: Drain
      • Task 2: Channel
      • Task 4: Trails
      • Transfer Task A
  3. Press “Start” (see above figure)
  4. Slides and Video: The slides (on the student's monitor) will immediately start, lasting a couple minutes, followed by the video associated with that task.
  5. Projection start: The task will automatically start by presenting the landscape onto the sand model following the video’s completion. At this point, click on the Tangible Landscape dialog (figure above) (do not click on any buttons on the dialog however) - this is important to ensure the window has focus and the system can properly receive the button press event (when the participant presses the yellow button)
  6. Task End: The task is ended by either the student pressing the yellow button or the elapse of 10 minutes.
    • (Please note that with the Drain task, they will need to press the button several times, which only signifies the end of a sub-task, not the entire task)
    • If the task not is not ended by either the participant pressing the yellow button or the elapse of 10 minutes, press ‘End task’
  7. Data processing after each task: After each task ends, the data will need to process. During this time the Tangible Landscape dialogue will be greyed out (i.e., unresponsive) and the mouse will turn into a round loading icon. Please wait for the dialog to return to normal before proceeding.
    • Common problem with this step: The windows may get unresponsive (greyed out dialogue window) but will return to normal in several seconds or up to a minute (depending on the complexity of the task).
  8. Change the model out with the appropriate model for the next task (see model order below)
  9. Press the ‘>’ button to proceed to the next task
  10. Repeat from Step 2 (Pressing “Start”)

Troubleshooting steps:

  • If something is wrong (the presentation does not change on the model) try:
    • Select “End task” and wait until the message “hands off” disappears from the model
    • Close all ongoing operations (all windows)
    • Open ‘System monitor’ (left task bar) and check for ‘r.in.kinect’ process. If there is one, right click - Kill - Kill process
    • Open everything as described before and then skip to the current task by pressing the ‘>’ button.
    • If the above steps do not fix the issue, see Troubleshooting
