#### Important Notes (!!! READ THESE EVEN IF YOU IGNORE THE REST !!!)
- As mentioned in the [Boat](/apple/boat.html) section, not only am I putting
in a pivoting centerboard (with design provided by Tom), but I'm using the
removable centerboard design popular in Francois Vivier's boats, where there
is a slot in the side of the case where a pin that protrudes from the side of
the board comes out. | ||

![This photo shows the shape of the slot, which I reinforced with another layer
of 6mm plywood (so there is 12mm of bearing surface on either side) before
capping with hardwood.](/static/apple/IMG_2400.jpeg)

stringer will be added later.](/static/apple/IMG_2587.jpeg)

<div style="clear: both"></div>

![In a really interesting (and, I think much easier to make watertight) method, a hole for the case is cut in the hull and it is dropped clear through.](/static/apple/IMG_3254.jpeg)
<div style="clear: both"></div>
![This means later, once it is glued in, the excess is cut off the outside, and the hull to centercase joint is exposed to the bottom, so it is much easier to seal.](/static/apple/IMG_7634.jpeg)
<div style="clear: both"></div>
![The joint can then be filled, and should be rounded and then glassed (give it a good round -- probably with a trim router -- as I didn't round mine much and then had trouble getting the glass to lay down well)](/static/apple/IMG_7636.jpeg)
<div style="clear: both"></div>
![Back inside, you can see the stringer that runs along the side, and how it is filleted to the hull, to the semi bulkhead towards the front and glued to the bulkhead at the back.](/static/apple/IMG_7418.jpeg) |

About this part | ||

#### Important Notes (!!! READ THESE EVEN IF YOU IGNORE THE REST !!!)
- The designer mentions you could have a single continuous keel running all the
way front to back. I didn't do that, but regretted it once trying to use this
on trailer rollers. I'm planning on replacing the rollers with a single plank,
which will eliminate the problem (essentially, the discontinuous pieces of
keel bump up and down over the rollers), but if you aren't, I'd aim to avoid
the problem by having the forward keel connect to that on either side of the
centercase, and have that in turn connect to the skeg.

increments), I glassed in sections, overlapping slightly each
time](/static/apple/IMG_7762.jpeg)

![The rest of the glass went on in sections. I often missed the fill coat
window, or didn't fill with enough (slightly thickened) epoxy to get a proper
chemical bond, but I was close, using pretty good low-blush epoxy, and it all
seemed to work out.](/static/apple/IMG_7997.jpeg)

<div style="clear: both"></div>

![And, starting with the primer. I did two coats of System 3's Yacht primer, rolling and tipping. It dries a little fast, which makes it hard to get a perfect finish, but it certainly gets a good enough finish. Each full coat took a little over an hour.](/static/apple/IMG_8123.jpeg)

<div style="clear: both"></div>

![Finally, the top coat. I did four coats, _not_ sanding between, as the System 3 WR-LPU (which they are phasing out for something similar) has a chemical bond recoat window, and that saved me a ton of time -- no runs, minimal brush marks, and overall, quite happy!](/static/apple/IMG_8148.jpeg)

![The keel band I made out 1/8" x 3/4" 316 stainless, which was easy to get, cheap, easy to _bend_, but a huge pain to drill (if I had a drill press, I might feel differently). In the end, I got it to work.](/static/apple/IMG_8229.jpeg)

About this part | ||
#### Important Notes (!!! READ THESE EVEN IF YOU IGNORE THE REST !!!)
- Honestly, there wasn't much to be done here -- obviously, if you want a
perfect finish, do the work _before_ you start painting (i.e., keep working on
fairing, etc). | ||
### Photos of building sequence, with notes
<div style="clear: both"></div>
![First, a lot of scraping down fillets. I thought I was going to really pay for doing slightly messy work, but this rounded tiny carbide scraper turned out perfect and it actually wasn't that hard.](/static/apple/IMG_8294.jpeg)
<div style="clear: both"></div>
![Then, some fairing to hide the internal glass tape. I did this _strategically -- not in the bilge, or up under the rear thwarts, where it won't be visible (I still sanded those down, but didn't try to fair them to be invisible).](/static/apple/IMG_8303.jpeg)
<div style="clear: both"></div>
![Finally, three coats of epoxy, with sanding in between. Getting the sequence of this right so I wasn't trying to put my hand or feet in places I had already coated with trickier than I thought it would be, but my eventual strategy was to do overhanging places first (everywhere) and then go outside to the middle (where my stepladder is on the side). The overhangs are hard to get without leaning, grabbing parts, etc.](/static/apple/IMG_8309.jpeg)
<div style="clear: both"></div>
![Then it was time to install deck hardware and start priming the inside. I used the same two coats of primer on the inside as outside.](/static/apple/IMG_8389.jpeg)
<div style="clear: both"></div>
![And, finally, three coats of white on the inside. Three looked pretty good, and I was running out of time for my rowing-only launch date, so I stopped. ](/static/apple/IMG_8463.jpeg)
<div style="clear: both"></div>
