We have done a quick port of the messaging-app from Ubuntu-Touch, source: messaging-app.
Telegram - Some folk on Android use this as their primary SMS sending application, so it sends an SMS if the user isn't on Telegram, it has a QT based desktop app available (in debian backports). https://github.com/telegramdesktop/tdesktop
Matrix - seems to be the new IRC, also has planetgemini:matrix.org as a chatroom so we'll need a native client for that at some point.
Signal/TextSecure - There is an electrum based desktop application available from Whisper Systems and an UBPorts branch of an application: https://github.com/nanu-c/textsecure-qml.git
