DESCRIPTION

Don't touch the tanks, they don't want to be disturbed.

Screaming Tanks is an interactive experience, where players have the choice to disturb the tanks or to let them be. If a player decides to click on the tanks, they will be rip apart from their nest, causing them pain. Tanks will unleash a scream before crashing in the ground, causing them to abruptly shatter. If all the tanks are destroyed, there is nothing left to do, but to throw pieces of the demolished tanks and contemplate the result.

HISTORY

Screaming Tanks is an attempt to confront players with the choice to engage the piece and discover the interaction, or to let the ecosystem of the game alone and be ok with not playing the game. It might be successful in what it tries to convey, or not all. Nevertheless, during playtests some players decided to stop playing after ripping one or two tanks from the mass, having enough of the screams. Others decided to destroy the ecosystem. There are no good or wrong ways to interact with it, all experiences were shape around what players though to be right and wanted to do.

ABOUT Mélina Lopez-Racine

I make games.

I created Screaming Tanks within the framework of the course CART415: Game Studio I, given by the Computation Arts department of Concordia University, winter semester 2018.

Screaming Tanks was an opportunity to reuse sounds from a previous game jam game that was about banshees. Léandre Monette created those amazing screams, and I though it was a shame to let them rot in a folder. It was also an attempt to break from my usual design progress, which is usually to create things because “it looks cool”. In this case, to justify the combination of the asset and the sounds was challenging, but it is what lead to this interactive experience.

People might wonder “Why are the tanks screaming?”, and I like to think, “Well, why wouldn’t they? You disturbed them”.
