Data about Tasks and People

Problems we need to solve - Oct 21, 2015

  1. several managers would like insights into skills of their teams and are willing to have someone do data entry or require every person on their team to do so
  2. program managers would like insights about what kind of tasks the community wants to focus evangelism efforts to task creators
  3. Unclear purpose and utility. The experience needs to include clarity to users about how tags impact their experience (right now you can click on skills and it triggers a search)
  4. duplicate tags
  5. when people create tasks they aren't sure what tags to add (this could be addressed socially with the Opportunity Mentor adding tags)

Tasks

####Opportunity Mentoring We have found that inexperienced task creators need editorial help with reviewing and editing tasks. The description of the opportunity has a dramatic effect on whether a task is picked up and whether participants complete tasks.

  • For people who are creating a task, they might tag it GSA, 18F or Writing and that could notify someone who would have the power to edit and/or give feedback and publish.

Findability

  • other tasks like this
  • what skills will I develop by working on this? (e.g. JavaScript, Writing, Editing, Graphic Design)
  • what topic/subject matter, since that might cause me to pick one opportunity over another? (e.g. a writing task might be about education or finance or acquisitions)
  • by task creator -- maybe I admire this person or believe their task will be interesting because of their role
  • by agency -- maybe I would like to work at the agency in the future (or used to work there) or just am interested (like NPS) or feel that it is prestigious (like White House)
  • I want to be able to share a set of tasks at a specific URL, like all GSA full-time details or all 18F tasks or Maker Faire opportunities
  • Navigation and wayfinding. What category am I looking at? Does the site use categorization or how do I understand what I'm looking at and what is the paradigm in the site for finding what I need?
  • Navigating lists and paring them down into what is relevant at that moment for that user

Profile

in the future perhaps opportunities will find me, someday when we have lots of new opportunities every week, maybe there would be a personalized newsletter, in the near term, maybe people can search for people who might be good for their opportunity and send them a note. Also people might want to find an expert to learn from or someone learning the same thing to learn with.

  • what skills can I share
  • what skills do I want to develop
  • what am I interested in? (such as Education, Architecture, Environment, Climate Change)
  • who can help me get to where I want to be or accomplish my goal
