I prefer to specify a precise version of software I download to "just grab anything newest, I don't care". I prefer Github to pypi here, because I can download single file instead of whole tarball (I think pypi used to provide a single-file version to download, but now it doesn't). I've parametrized version of virtualenv to download (so user can override), and defaulted it to 1.6.1.
BTW, since virtualenv now uses git-flow, it's simple to specify "newest released" version when downloading from github - just use master branch instead of any specific tag.
Namely, 1.6.1, and it works with PyPy. For the newest stable version of virtualenv, you may consider fetching it from pypi instead of GH.
