Git-Practise

This is a practice repository for a Git Workshop.

Instructions

  1. Fork the Repo (upstream -> origin):

    • Click the "Fork" button at the top right of this page to create your copy (origin) of the main repo (upstream).
  2. Clone Your Fork (user/git-practise) to Your Local Machine (origin):

    • Open a terminal and run: git clone <your_fork_url>.
  3. Add a File with Your Name in the Project Directory (rishabh-mehta.txt):

    • Create a text file with your name (e.g., rishabh-mehta.txt).
    • Inside the text file, add your name and email.
  4. Add and Commit Changes to Git:

    • Use these commands:
      git add your-name.txt
      git commit -m "Added details of Rishabh Mehta"
      
  5. Push the Commit to Your Remote Repo (origin):

    • Execute: git push origin master (or the branch name you are working on).
  6. Create a Pull Request:

    • Go to the main repo (upstream) and click on "New Pull Request."
    • Select your fork (origin) and the branch with your changes.
    • Add a descriptive title and comments if needed.
    • Click "Create Pull Request" to propose merging your changes into the main repo.

Important Keywords

  • Upstream: CSI-PHCET/git-practise (The main repo you want to work on) (No Write Permissions on this).
  • Origin: user/git-practise (Your fork/copy of the main repo (upstream)) (Write Permissions available, since it's your copy).
  • Repo/Repository: The Project / Main Folder of the Project.
  • Local Repo: The project on your local machine (Your Laptop/PC).
  • Remote Repo (Upstream/Origin): The project's copy not on your machine (GitHub).
  • Fork: Your copy/clone of the main project.
