Hi ESMG group! I have a question: we want to cite your repository in a JOSS manuscript we are putting together and we are wondering what does ESMG stand for?

I want to clarify that I didn't add the label. If I had the choice I'd add the label question.

Not related to https://www.ornl.gov/group/earth-systems-modeling, but unfortunately I think it overlaps with the name? @kshedstrom. This will be the first known reference for this toolset. Once we have a definitive response, if you would share the reference you ultimately decide on here, that would be great.

Great -- thanks!

@misc{gridtools,
  author = {Rob Cermak and James Simkins and Kate Hedstrom and Angus Gibson},
  year      = {2021},
  title     = {Earth System Modeling Group Gridtools},
  publisher = {Github},
  journal   = {GitHub repository},
  url       = {https://github.com/ESMG/gridtools}
}

That's what we currently have. Suggestions are welcome.

You could, perhaps, add information/attribution for where you borrowed things in the README of the repo?

Alphabetical is ok, but James put the most work into this set of tools and should be listed first. So, any algorithms should have references from where they were sourced. Using the current contributor list to this repo should be fine. I did try to keep a master bibliography with all the sources. https://github.com/ESMG/gridtools/blob/main/source/references.bib. There is some rough lineage.

OK, we currently just listed as authors all the contributors with the order they appear at https://github.com/ESMG/gridtools/graphs/contributors?from=2021-04-25&to=2024-04-08&type=c

Are you suggesting I change the order to:

  author = {James Simkins and Rob Cermak and Kate Hedstrom and Angus Gibson},

?
