Coldboothax: Installing Coldboot Haxchi

Optional Step: If you have been following the guide up until now, we can now run HaxchiFW (or Mocha CFW if you chose to use redNAND) from the system menu via Haxchi. What we're going to do now is run it when you start the Wii U from the get go. This means that when you turn your Wii U on, your system menu will be signature patched automatically.

Proceed with caution: This is an optional procedure. Right now Coldboothax is still very early in development. Because of this, there are numerous ways you can brick your Wii U before and after using this method. Please read through all the brick warnings in this section. I am not responsible for any bricked Wii Us.

  • If using redNAND, I'm assuming you've configured Mocha CFW as directed by the last section.

  • Thanks to FIX94 for this awesome tool!

BRICK WARNING

Coldboothax is dangerous. If things aren't setup correctly before we move on, this will brick your console. Make sure you have done the following:

  • Haxchi is functional.

    • It doesn't matter what it's currently booting to. If it boots any kind of homebrew (Homebrew Launcher, RetroArch, Mocha CFW, etc) then you're good.
  • Haxchi is on your internal memory/ sysNAND.

    • This means that your Haxchi title should be on your Wii U. If it is on USB, it will not work.

I am not responsible if you brick your Wii U.

  • Note: Your current Haxchi title won't work for booting whatever homebrew you need after this.

If you've double checked everything in the above section, then we're ready to go.

Step 1) Download the latest Coldboot Haxchi installer.

Step 2) Extract the contents of the folder to the root of your SD card.

  • Note: There should only be two folders: 'cbhc' and 'wiiu'.

Step 3) Put the SD card into the SD Card slot in your Wii U.

Step 4) Unplug all USB devices currently plugged into the Wii U.

Step 5) Turn on your Wii U, and get to the Homebrew Launcher using your preferred method.

Step 6) Boot CBHC - Coldboot Haxchi Installer.

Step 7) It will automatically detect compatible Haxchi titles installed on your Wii U's internal storage. Select the Haxchi title you wish to use. Press 'A'.

Step 8) Text with a few options will appear, a long with a warning. Read this warning, and press 'A' to install Coldboot Haxchi.

Step 9) It will send you back to the Wii U system menu. Reboot your Wii U.

Step 10) A menu should pop up at boot. You'll have a few options:

  • Boot System Menu
  • Boot Homebrew Launcher
  • Boot Mocha CFW
  • Boot fw.img on SD Card
  • Autoboot: Disabled

Move the arrow down to the 'Autoboot' option. Press 'A" until it looks like this:

  • If you choose to use a sig-patched system menu (HaxchiFW)

    • Autoboot: System Menu
  • If you choose to use Mocha CFW with redNAND

    • Autoboot: Mocha CFW

Step 11) Now select 'Boot System Menu' or 'Boot Mocha CFW' (depending on what you chose above) and press 'A'.

When you reach the system menu, restart your Wii U. If it boots into the system menu (with a Mocha CFW splash screen with redNAND), then congratulations! You've installed Coldboot Haxchi!

BRICK WARNING

To emphasize, you can still brick your Wii U.

  • Make sure the Coldboot Haxchi title is in a safe place.

    • You should have ensured that the Colboot Haxchi title is in a safe place on the system menu prior to installation.
    • You need to make sure Coldboot Haxchi title does not get deleted. If you delete Coldboot Haxchi, you will brick your Wii U. Put the title in a safe place on the Wii U prior to installation.
    • Don't move the Coldboot Haxchi title to USB.
  • Don't update your Wii U.

    • Take every precaution listed in this section. If your Wii U happens to update the sysNAND, you will brick.
    • If you've configured Mocha CFW with redNAND, then you can delete the internet settings on the sysNAND and keep them on redNAND. This is the best way to block updates to ensure Nintendo doesn't mess with our settings.
  • Don't run the Haxchi installer over the Coldboot Haxchi title.

  • Don't install your chosen CBHC DS VC game again from the eShop on sysNAND!

  • You need to realize that if you've modified your DS VC game, you won't be able to play it again while using CBHC. This is the small sacrifice you make. If you install over this with the legitimate version WHILE having CBHC installed, you will brick your Wii U.

  • NOTE for redNAND users ONLY: If you are running redNAND, and you know for a fact that you're in redNAND, you can now delete your Coldboot Haxchi title, or make it into a Haxchi title, if you wanted. Coldboot Haxchi only needs to be present on sysNAND.

Again, I am no way responsible if you brick your Wii U.

Coldboothax: Accessing the Coldboot Haxchi Menu

Now when the Wii U is booting, you will see a small prompt appear on your display and the Wii U tablet. It will look something like this:

CBHC v1.5 by FIX94 (DS Title XXXXXXXX)

Autobooting...

During this prompt, you can press (or hold) the 'Home' button on the Wii U tablet (wii remote, classic controller, or pro controller) to access the Coldboot Haxchi menu again. The one that looks like this:

  • Boot System Menu
  • Boot Homebrew Launcher
  • Boot Mocha CFW
  • Boot fw.img on SD Card
  • Autoboot: fw.img on SD Card

Set 'Autoboot' to 'Disabled' if you want this menu to keep popping up.

Coldboothax: Uninstalling Coldboot Haxchi

If you want to uninstall Coldboot Haxchi, please follow along below.

Step 1) Turn on your Wii U, and get to the Homebrew Launcher using your preferred method.

  • Note: Remember, your (now) Coldboot Haxchi title will be incapable of booting the Homebrew Launcher. Also, don't touch it.

  • Note 2: Make sure you're in sysNAND.

Step 2) Boot CBHC - Coldboot Haxchi Installer.

Step 3) Select your Coldboot Haxchi title. Press 'A'.

Step 4) Text with a few options will appear, a long with a warning. Read this warning, and press 'B' to uninstall Coldboot Haxchi.

Step 5) After it says that it's done uninstalling, it will send you back to the Wii U system menu after booting the image on the root of your SD card again. Restart your Wii U.

At this point, it won't be auto-booting the image on the root of your SD card. Congratulations, you've uninstalled Coldboot Haxchi!

Restoring Haxchi

After uninstalling Coldboot Haxchi, you will still be able to access the title and still see the Coldboot Haxchi menu. At this point, the menu is pretty pointless so you probably want to make this title useful again and restore normal Haxchi functions. ONLY when you have uninstalled Coldboot Haxchi, use this guide.

Step 1) You need to download the latest release of the Haxchi Installer

  • NOTE: If you took the time to go through the starter pack set-up tutorial, you already have the necessary software required in the correct directories. You can skip to Step 4.

Step 2) Extract the 'haxchi' folder and 'wiiu' folder into the root of your SD card.

Step 3) Put the SD card into the SD Card slot in your Wii U

Step 4) Turn on your Wii U, and get to the Homebrew Launcher using your preferred method, and launch the 'Haxchi Installer'.

Step 5) A black screen will appear with the name of the app, and credits on the top. It will automatically detect compatible Haxchi titles installed on your Wii U's internal storage. Select the game and press 'A'.

Step 6) It will give you a message that reads:

This will install Haxchi. To remove it you have to delete and re-install the game. If you are sure press A, else press HOME.

Press 'A' to install Haxchi.

This will proceed to install Haxchi, and it will then reboot to the system menu. Congratulations, you've restored Haxchi!
