The Mesbin System

Name: Mesbin.

Designation: Kaywell A d.

Discovery (Kerbin): Transit.

Rediscovery (Mesbin): Homeworld. (Known since crash)

Mesbin is a uniquely shaped, massive planet. Its rotation period of 1,701 seconds is the fastest of any object in the solar system, and this allows it to be livable despite its incredible gravity. At the equator, its gravity is 1.29 gees. At the poles, the gravity is 13.24. The strange shape comes from the centrifugal force pushing material outward at the equator--and it is the centrifugal force that reduces equatorial gravity, not just the distance from the core. Mesbin was settled by a crashed colony ship: The U.S.C. Manifest Destiny, which came from the Kerbol System over 1660 Mesbin-years ago. Slowly building up their civilization within underground caverns and lava tubes and introducing a stable subterranean ecosystem was not easy, but as evident by our existence today, they succeeded.

Mesbin's atmosphere is restricted to a deep crater basin on the north pole. Only a very thin exosphere surrounds the rest of the planet up to 10 km from the equator. For almost all intents and purposes, Mesbin is an airless planet.

Composition:

  • Hydrogen 94.45%

  • Helium 4%

  • Nitrogen 1%

  • Water 0.4%

  • Methane 0.1%

  • Carbon Dioxide 0.05%

  • Pressure: 1.0 atm.

  • Greenhouse Effect: 42.98° Celsius.

  • Polar Temperature: -28.15° Celsius.

  • Atmosphere limit = 77,000 meters from polar surface.

  • Exosphere limit = 984,827 meters from polar surface. 10,000 meters from equator. This is the altitude that must be crossed to enter "space" according to career-mode contracts and the timewarp system.

Moons

Mesbin has a complex and rich satellite system, the entire system containing eight bodies.

Mesbin, Graymun, and Derbin seen from the mountains of Kerbmun.

  • Statmun: A small moon 12 km across, made out of a monolithic chunk of iron, stuck in a mesbin-stationary orbit. It contains absolutely no volatile ore, and can not be used for In-Situ refueling.

  • Thresomin: A small 3 km across moon, (or perhaps the largest moonlet), made of rock with some volatile ores, orbiting in a 3:1 resonance with Statmun and Mesbin's rotation.

  • Graymun: A Mun-sized moon.

  • Kerbmun: A Kerbin-sized habitable world with oceans, continents, and some oxygen.

  • Troymin: A minor moon orbiting in the same orbit as Kerbmun as a trojan. Composed of rock with significant volatile ores as well.

  • Derbin: The binary companion to Mesbin, a super-kerbin-mass Venus-like planet.

  • Derminmus: The small chocolate-minty satellite of Derbin, and again quite rich in volatiles.

  • Dermun: The larger and dryer and more geologically complex of the two satellites of Derbin.

The moonlet system of Mesbin, when (too) many asteroids are tracked

Mesbin also contains several moonlet groups of small asteroid-like objects thought to have originated from the body that Statmun was once a part of. These chunks of metal and rock orbit between Mesbin's exosphere and Graymun, with a few stragglers further out and a few terrifying diving asteroids which skim the surface of Mesbin. The latter group has caused some damage to Mesbinite surface settlements in the past, and one of the duties of a Mesbin Space Program is the tracking and redirection of potentially hazardous moonlets. These moonlets provide a significant source of raw materials including the volatile ore neccessary to refine rocket fuel, and as such they make excellent fuel stations.

The minor moons Thresomin and Troymin are also excellent fuel stations for those space programs that don't wish to trifle around with little moonlets--from their spectrums it has been determined that they are rich in volatile ores!

Geology

Mesbin is an internally active world with active volcanism, plate tectonics, and other geological processes.
