The Ranger...Awesomeness. Launch and all purpose vehicle.

The Ranger has a Built-In VTOL engine. So when you first place it in the VAB the engine you see in the staging list is the VTOL engine.

The Ranger also has built in Landing Legs that can be deployed or retracted in the VAB or in flight.

You then need to add two Cooper engines to the rear for forward thrust.

The EVA hatch is at the rear, attach a Ranger docking port over it (optional) to have a functioning docking port and place to attach the Ranger to the Endurance ring.

Stage the VTOL engine in your first stage and the Cooper engines together in the second stage. Assign a custom action group to the VTOL and a second custom action group to the two Cooper engines. You can then toggle the VTOL an the Cooper engines using the action groups. You may also wish to assign toggle engines to another action group. The Cooper engines are two mode engines - Air Mode and Closed cycle mode.
