This may be a really stupid question, as I know nothing about this code, but: is it OK that pkg_mode is never reset to nothing? I.e. this is about getting a pointer to a specific LineEdi.Prompt instance, and once you have it, you never have to look for it again -- correct?

Reverts "Pkg REPL: cache `pkg_mode` lookup (JuliaLang#54359)" as this function is replaced when Pkg loads by a simpler repl switch so no caching is needed

I reverted this in #54594 because I hadn't realized that this keymap function is replaced entirely by the simpler one in Pkg.REPLExt. (The todo comment was deceiving) |

Might as well avoid the effort on following Pkg repl switches.
It doesn't make a noticeable difference on my machine, but who knows on slower systems.
