I'm a bit concerned that this seems to take a bug like JuliaLang/Pkg.jl#3984 and make it even more invisible. That does contradict what I wrote in that issue:
But having the function silently handle an error like this for you (in a way the caller cannot observe) seems like a step in the wrong direction, since it means that we cover up easy-to-write race conditions / misspellings upstream. Is there a way we can somewhere still guard against this kind of problem in Pkg? |

Yeah this is not the fix for that issue, it just does the right thing, I feel. Previously this function assumed the depot cache was immutable and it's not. Another Julia process could have deleted the cache it was assessing since it was called. Pkg needs a few more fixes that I will work on. |
