The problem: In rural areas you may be 50km between places.
At this scale, most roads are hidden. You simply cannot see that they exist.

What is needed is a mode where all roads are shown, and they are shown in clear contrasting colours and linewidths.
i.e not 1pix grey lines on a grey backgrounds.

This is a problem on all electronic maps I have used. And it is a problem on none of the paper ones.

For example on the map I am viewing, to see my route between the two closest town the scale is 20km.
The main/only road between them is not even shown until the scale is <=6km.
The side road I am looking for appears as a fine line, not really distinct from contours or other features at 1km,
and it becomes a clear road at 300m.
On the paper map, all this is visible at a single look.
On the electronic map, you have (20/0.3)^2 maplets to search ie >10000.

Hi @sbridger. Did you tried outdoor map or tune "map magnification" ? Problem is that stylesheet defines what types are visible in which zoom level and it is not possible to take object density into account. So, it is necessary to make compromise between map in rural areas and big cities...

Anyway, it is still possible to tune stylesheets for your needs. They are just text files, stored on directory /usr/share/harbour-osmscout/map-styles/. You can edit in standard text editor, or try StyleEditor from https://github.com/Framstag/libosmscout project.

I assume you mean "maps->style->hiking and biking" . That doesn't change the hiding of lesser roads

I think that it is best to have a specific show-all style/mode for road mapping.

try StyleEditor from https://github.com/Framstag/libosmscout
Do you know if there is an exe somewhere?

and it is not possible to take object density into account
Is it not possible to evaluate the number of roads on screen at a particular zoom level, the set style accordingly, on a screen by screen basis. I am not actually suggesting doing this because a) its probably a lot of work; b) it would probably be really annoying in practice as the map changed style at every zoom and pan when you were in urban/rural overlap areas.
