Dont blank out info for removed content #1813
Comments
At first it was like that, then someone requested that we blank out posts and comments instead of just set the deleted flag. So we should pry vote on this, bc I don't want to have to keep going back and forth. It doesn't matter to me either way.
Only a creator can delete it. Mods can remove it, and in that situation we might want to blank things out. |
I think if the text is completely hidden like it is now, that makes the mod log almost useless. Sure you can see what was removed, but you cant judge for yourself if that seems correct. There are only few cases where a post/comment is so bad that it should be hidden completely (and thats what purge is for). One option could be to show the text of removed posts/comments only to users who are logged in. Or only to admins and mods of that community (could be configurable). |
The modlog will show the original post / comment text (it isn't deleted after all), but when you go to them in the post, they'll be blanked out. So the modlog is transparent for removes, but they won't show in the post. |
Looks like it currently shows the post title or comment text. But not the post link/body, which are often more relevant. The layout could also be improved tbh. |
I'd be fine with not blanking out post titles or bodies, only comment content, but I don't wanna have to go back and forth either. |
I think that #1680 goes too far and hides too much information of removed content, making the mod log useless. For example, here is a removed post:
This used to have the title, text and link still shown, which allowed users to see for themselves what was removed, and to decide themselves if it made sense. Its also the reason we are adding a separate purge option.
So I suggest that we blank out info only if the creator themselves deleted an item, and probably for removed comments as well (there, text is hidden from the website, so it makes sense to hide it from the api too). But removed posts and communities should still show all information.
