To wipe or not to wipe

Marcel Bokhorst edited this page May 10, 2013 · 4 revisions

###System###

When you install a new CyanogenMod version, system is wiped during the upgrade process. Wiping system even results in problems (status 7), because some existing files are needed by the CyanogenMod install process. Some files are backed up during the upgrade process and wiping may be useful to fix problems concerning these backed up files. Most notable when you installed a wrong version of Google apps. See here about how to fix wrong Google apps without wiping system. Since Google apps resides in system and system is wiped during installation of CyanogenMod, the Google apps needs to be flashed again after each CyanogenMod installation.

###Cache###

Wiping cache is mostly not needed, because the system automatically detects which files needs to be updated. You can see this when starting the system results in Optimizing. It doesn't harm to wipe the (dalvik) cache however, you only have to wait longer before your system has started fully.

###Data###

Wiping data is mostly not needed too, because the data storage of the apps is mostly compatible for CM9.x / CM10.x. If you have problems you can clear the data of one app using Manage apps.

Summarized: never wipe, only when you have problems or coming from a ROM with another base (not CyanogenMod ) and never wipe system.
