Project Lead: @shreevari @madhurish

Mentor:

Welcome to OL6, Cohort A! This issue will be used to track your project and progress during the program. Please use this checklist over the next few weeks as you start Open Leadership Training 🎉.

Before Week 1 (Sept 11): Your first mentorship call

  • Complete the OLF self-assessment (online, printable). If you're a group, each teammate should complete this assessment individually. This is here to help you set your own personal goals during the program. No need to share your results, but be ready to share your thoughts with your mentor.
  • Make sure you know when and how you'll be meeting with your mentor.

Before Week 2 (Sept 18): First Cohort Call (Open by Design)

Before Week 3 (Sept 25): Mentorship call

  • Look up two other projects and comment on their issues with feedback on their vision statement.
  • Complete your Open Canvas (instructions, canvas). Comment on this issue with a link to your canvas.
  • Start your Roadmap. Comment on this issue with your draft Roadmap.

Before Week 4 (Oct 2): Cohort Call (Build for Understanding)

  • Look up two other projects and comment on their issues with feedback on their open canvas.
  • Pick an open license for the work you're doing during the program.
  • Use your canvas to start writing a README, or landing page, for your project. Link to your README in a comment on this issue.

This issue is here to help you keep track of work during the first month of the program. Please refer to the OL6 Syllabus for more detailed weekly notes and assignments past week 4.

[UPDATED] Vision:
To Create awareness about the risk of being exploited by blindly accepting Terms and Conditions(T&Cs).
And hence bring about a change in something users have been taking for granted since the inception of technology.
To build a browser extension that

  1. Filters important clauses, given any T&C document, and displays only important clauses.
  2. Summarizes and groups the clauses in meaningful contexts.

Hey! Your vision statement sounds great. Looks like we're working on similar projects. Would you like to connect and see where the overlap is?

@miazamoraphd

Sounds like a great project. Wondering your project entails a set of outlined practices, or a special application, or platform, or a community you are building? The specific sense of what the project actually is (...what are you making?) is still unclear. But it definitely sounds like something needed!

@miazamoraphd We are building a browser extension that filters important clauses, given any T&C document, and displays only important ones. We're looking into the possibility of a summarizer too.

@shreevari We're working on a very similar project - have you any interest in discussing this?

Hi @tedarbyshire , I'm sorry, I overlooked your comment. I checked out your Vision statement and we're doing exactly the same thing! Our vision statement is just a little less specific, but our plans overlap to a great extent. We definitely want to collaborate with you!

Hi @shreevari Perhaps we can put a call in this week? Would be great to connect! Sounds like we have a good group of experts between us :)

@shreevari and @madhurish Important Project! Just a suggestion: I'd combine this and this and draft an updated vision statement.

@shreevari @madhurish Took a look at the open canvas. For your contributor profiles, would it be helpful to have experts in Natural Language Processing on the team? I've worked with some on projects that involve crawling media metadata and it seems that they have good tools (also open source resources) to crawl text and extract meaningful information.

@fraguada Thank you for your suggestion, we definitely need contributors with expertise in NLP. If you could point us to open source tools for text summarization, that'd be great. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. Cheers!

@shreevari @madhurish I know little about NLP, but my colleagues are using Bablenet, DBPedia, and VerbNet. Hope that helps.

this is such an important topic for end-user privacy across the Web and on mobile apps. Two projects you may draw inspiration from:

This such an important project. I am happy to see that you are working towards addressing this. I might have missed something but I didn't get how this will be rolled out on mobile. I come from a place(Kenya) where mobile lending apps are harvesting data indiscriminately and majority of the people don't even know what they are giving up in exchange of "free & quick" credit. So it might be a nice place to test this actually]

I had checked out tosdr but not Pribot/Polisis. The work they've done on it is amazing! Thanks @seandiggity for telling about these projects!
