@climbfuji climbfuji commented Nov 21, 2020

This PR updates the GSL physics in the master branch from gsd/develop:

  • add unified gravity wave drag (called unified ugwp) that combines the UGWP v1 with the GSL drag suite
  • update GFS_debug.F90 to unify how GFS_diagtoscreen and GFS_interstitialtoscreen work
  • tuning of Grell-Freitas convective parameterization
  • update gcycle to work with other numbers of vertical levels than just 4
  • update MYNN surface layer parameterization
  • update of Thompson microphysics parameterization: unify WRF v3.8.1 and v4 code
  • update of RUC LSM: run RUC LSM init in physics _init phase (not in _run phase in first time step)
  • add a tracer sanitizer scheme for testing (not used by any suite by default)

For regression testing, see ufs-community/ufs-weather-model#297

Update gsd/develop from NCAR master
- All changes in GF (set c0 = 0.02 for mid-clouds, changes water-ice transition temperature to what was used in FIM)
Physics changes made for/during HFIP 2020
to the ;sm_ruc_init. Several issues:
1. soil and vegetation types needed for initialization are not assigned
yet. Therefore, some parts of the code that use soil types is turned
off.
2. There seems to ne inconsistency of land=true/false with the Noah smc,
stc, slc variables.
At this stage the limited verison of initialization code causes a crash
in Thompson MP.
Updates and bug fix for MYNN surface layer scheme
Increase length of message and update declaration in qcmxmn to avoid writing out of bounds
Changes for flexible number of soil levels.
physics/sfcsub.F: reduce length of message string for prettier output

Since these variables were changed to intent(out), was care taken to make sure that they are always set within?

Yes, these are always initialized completely.

Is there any more information about this new scheme? Why was it added? I can certainly understand why one would want to ensure non-negative values of these tracers, but just setting these to zero could lead to water conservation issues, right? What about an option for a multiplicative hole-filler or something else that conserves water?

Approved. There are some issues that were previously pointed out with respect to the UGWP scheme changes and CCPP rules, but these have already been discussed and it is understood that this is a work-in-progress. A little more info about why the "tracer sanitizer" routine appears would be nice.

The tracer_sanitizer routine was added for testing purposes mainly, in particular if negative values of the tracers are responsible for / help with model instabilities. We could easily remove it as well, but GSL developers felt it would be nice to have it. This is obviously a first and crude attempt without taking into account water conservation etc. If we decide to keep this on the long run, we need to add some documentation at least. It is not used anywhere, only commented out int two GSL SDFs (and not added elsewhere).

The dycore should not produce any negative tracer. It has been known that SAS may occasionally produce negative water vapor at a few points. Another source of negative water vapor and negative could hydrometers may come from data assimilation. Any correction needs to take mass conservation into consideration.

It's not about negative tracers from the dycore, it's from the physics (because physics tendencies are collected for a bunch of physics in one part of the suite and then subtracted collectively, the schemes themselves do not know if the tendency they are producing are too large). This only applies to the GSL physics. As I said, it's a "duct tape" which sits there for testing only and not supposed to be used in any real application. If we get hung up on it, we can remove it and I rerun the tests on one or more platforms, not an issue.

The NSSL scheme is used in NSSL's daily FV3 convection-allowing forecasts, and the scheme itself is aimed at this scale (dx <= 4km). Testing is underway also with a preliminary Warn-on-Forecast FV3 ensemble.
