Only problem is that some systems (OS X?) might not have xz.

Default seems to have been .xz for a while now, at least on Linux?

This refers to the binary tarballs of Nix releases, which are still in .tar.bz2 format: https://nixos.org/releases/nix/nix-1.11.9/

And OS X still has no xz by default.
