Looks like underwrapped vmware's zenity tool:

$ NIXPKGS_ALLOW_UNFREE=1 nix-shell -p vmware-workstation

[nix-shell:~]$ /nix/store/1ndv0jg5yc1pcvawfb8r14a5xm6m7vdx-vmware-workstation-16.2.3/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-zenity --error --text 'foo'

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

$ lddtree /nix/store/1ndv0jg5yc1pcvawfb8r14a5xm6m7vdx-vmware-workstation-16.2.3/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-zenity

We patch some important binaries at https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blob/master/pkgs/applications/virtualization/vmware-workstation/default.nix#L179-L193 , but not zenity. I think it's a bug.

@halturin vmware-workstation can't be installed as separate package due to it's relience hardcoded paths, try virtualisation.vmware.host.enable option

@trofi lddtree displayed 5 missing libraries for me too, ldd worked fine and displayed all of them properly linked, something is probably wrong with lddtree

P.S. vmware-zenity crashes due to check for /etc/vmware path, can be checked with strace

@deinferno thanks for the reply. Is it possible to enable this option without restarting?

Oh, good point: lddtree is confused. I'll debug it separately.

enabled this option and now I got this problem

It seems that vmware-host-modules don't support kernel version 5.18 yet, try using 5.17

are there any updates?

@deinferno

You can try it on unstable branch, workstation was updated to 17.0.0 and kernel modules were update too, so it should work with newer kernels. Sadly it's still not possible to load new kernel modules without rebooting and vmware-workstation won't work without NixOS module due to hardcoded pathes.

I can't replicate this behaviour, what desktop environment and SHELL you use?

Replicating this issue here.

Simply add programs.YOUR-SHELL.enable = true;to your configuration.nix solves this.

This incident has been reported.

I'm facing the same issue. I'm using Sway and ZSH.

I use Fedora 39, virtualisation.vmware.host.enable doen't help me.

@fervulp NixOS modules are not usable for non-nixos distros. Try installing vmware workstation with your distro's tutorial on that.
