The bug
After the KB5004331 Windows 10 August 10 update the Open-Shell Start Menu opens but closes right after
To Reproduce

  1. Go to Open-Shell icon and do a left button click .
  2. The Start Menu screen should open and stay open.
  3. After the Windows update this screen opens but closes right after.

Version:

  • Open-Shell: [e.g. 4.4.160]
  • OS: Windows 10 PRO Version 21H1

The Windows 10 update
August 10, 2021-KB5004331 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10, version 2004, Windows Server, version 2004, Windows 10, version 20H2, and Windows Server, version 20H2, and Windows Version 21H1
Release Date:
August 10, 2021

Version:
.NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8

Summary
I believe that Open-Shell uses .NET Framework so I guess you will fix this issue.

I've already tried all the suggestions I've seen here on this blog.
My Windows does not have the News and Interest option to run from the Task Bar.
So the only way of to see the Open-Shell Start Menu is to fix the Task Bar on de left side of the screen.
If anyone has any new tips about this issue I would greatly appreciate your post.
Thank you!

It seems that the same problem already happened 10 days ago as reported here -> [Thread]#795

In that thread there is a workaround which worked for me. I came her today after the same happened to me also just today, after installing update KB5005033, KB5004331 and KB890830.

I can confirm this is happening after Windows Updates ran on my Win10 21H1 machine. I do have my taskbar on the top of the screen, and News and Interests sub-menu of the right click menu isn't visible until I moved my taskbar to the bottom. I was able to turn it off and it seems to have fixed the issue. See the linked thread #795 for more information. Thanks @Khaosmoon!

It seem that today august, 11st, Microsoft made some changens and reinstall KB5004331. But the problem remains.

Confirming that KB5005033 broke this for me and uninstalling it fixed it.

If you all will just follow the fix instructions to the T, this issue is easily fixed and you do not have to uninstall anything. Do not just read the headline, follow the explicit instructions and it takes less than 30 seconds to fix.

To 808IUFan. I am new aroud here. Could you please show me how to access the fix instructions?
Thanks a lot!

@BobJorge You need to do the following:

  1. Move your taskbar to the bottom of the screen if it's not there already.
  2. Right click on the taskbar, and select News and interests -> Turn Off
  3. Reposition your taskbar as desired.

I also took the opportunity to reinstall Openshell because I was unsure if I had the latest version. I downloaded and ran the installer and it was working immediately.

My taskbar is alredy in the botton of the screen and it does't have News ans Interests icon.
If I put it in the left side of the screen i can access the Open-Shell Start Menu. But I don't like the task bar on this position.

The only thing I can say it that 100% of the time when I move the taskbar to the bottom and I am not in full screen mode, it appears. When you turn that off and move the taskbar back to the top, everything works like it should. Why dont you try moving it to the top and then back to the bottom and RIGHT clicking.

Just confirming what some others have noted:

  • Uninstalling and fresh install of Open-Shell did not resolve the issue.
  • Three steps below do resolve the issue:
  1. Move your taskbar to the bottom of the screen if it's not there already.
  2. Right click on the taskbar, and select News and interests -> Turn Off
  3. Reposition your taskbar as desired.

I just also want to report that after installing KB5005033, Open-Shell started to behave erratically. It opens for a bit then closes in a 'blink of an eye'. After doing the workaround which @tracejm and others made, it worked and Open-Shell is now doing fine. No more flashing Open-Shell.

I had the "Classic Shell" installed. After the Windows Update installed, "Classic Shell" it was working fine. After the start menu started to close (and something else I can't remember right now) it occurred to me to uninstall "Classic Shell", and I found that now it was "Open Shell". After installing the new version, the error still persists.
My taskbar is at the top, it's automatically hidden, and it's only enabled if I step over it or press the "Start Menu" button.
I do not have the option of "News and Interests" between the menus. What other solution can you give me?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you. Simple three-step instructions worked.

@cafecitooh for whatever reason, it seeems that microsoft only lets that menu category show up when the task bar is at the bottom of the screen -- it vanishes when it's at the top, even with openshell uninstalled

Drag the taskbar to the bottom of the screen as per screenshots in this github comment thread, and you should be good to get the menu option, then when the option is changed you can put it back at the top of the screen where you want it to be.

Seems Microsoft didn't expect people to want to change the option when it's at the top of their screen for some reason?

@packetdog

@cafecitooh So if you move your taskbar to the bottom, turn off auto-hide, and right click on it, you don't have a "News and interests" option? If you run winver (WindowsKey + R, type 'winver' without the quotes, and press enter), which version are you on?

@clarjon1 It's more than that, even if the option is turned on, it only renders the News and Interests section when the taskbar is in the bottom position. It seems more like a newer coder that doesn't understand the fundamentals of the Windows UI going back to at least 95/98 if not earlier, and they build something new that only works in one position. It's a shortcut honestly, like they figured that <10% of the population moves their taskbar, so instead of making it work, screw it, let's just hide it. That hide is what I believe breaks OpenShell.

@cafecitooh

@clarjon1 clarjon1 It's true. When the bar is down, the problem stops occurring. Will there be any other solutions for an update?
I can take this for a while like this, because I don't like that the bar is down, and less than that, that it does not hide automatically. *I'm enclosing an image to demonstrate that it works fine if it is below, even with the "auto hide" function.

image

@packetdog I tried activating and deactivating the "auto hide" option with the up and down slash, and simply, the "News and Interests" option did not appear. *I attach the image of the Windows version.

@packetdog

@cafecitooh That's so strange! I'm not sure what the deal is with that then. Hmm.

@cafecitooh
Copy link

@packetdog From what they say above, the problem not only happens with "Open-Shell", is directly a problem with Windows itself. But, I mean... is there a way to prevent this from happening with the "Open-Shell" installed?

@cafecitooh

Update: Today it started working fine, even after restarting the PC. I checked that there was no update from "Windows Update"... there was only some "Windows Defender", but it had not been updated yet.
I remember that in the morning it still worked badly. When I returned I found that it was already working correctly.
I don't know if they released a new version of "Open-Shell" and if it updates automatically. I reiterate, I didn't move the bar from top to bottom again and I could not disable the "News and Interests" option of the taskbar.

Today I found the solution to my problem.
As I prefer to use the toolbar at the top of my notebook screen, I found out that in this position the News and Interests option doesn't appear and so I had no way to disable it.
So, I moved the toolbar to the bottom of the screen and this option popped up.
And then I just turned it off so that Pen-Shell reappears when I click on Start Icon.
I appreciate the tips posted here, as they helped me find the solution.
