AASM

American Academy Sleep Medicine

EEG

Electroencephalogram or Electroencephalography

Hypnogram

Graph allowing to visualize the different phases of sleep according to the time spent during a sleep sequence.

Sleep latency

Sleep latency is defined by the time required to fall asleep.

Polysomnography

Medical examination that consists of recording several physiological data of a patient during sleep (oro-nasal airflow, electro-oculography, electromyography, electroencephalography, observation of movement, sound recording, etc.), in order to diagnose a sleep disorder. Sleep Sequence: A period of time in which an individual attempts and/or succeeds in falling asleep (e.g. one night's sleep, one nap).

Sleep stages, defined according to the AASM

W

Wake

REM

Rapid Eye Movement, stage of REM sleep.

N[1,2,3]

Light sleep stage (N1), normal sleep stage (N2) and deep sleep stage (N3). N3 can sometimes be called SWS, which stands for slow wave sleep. These stages can be grouped under the same name, NREM, which stands for non-rapid eye-movement.

WASO

(Wake after sleep onset) This corresponds to the wake up time after the start of sleep.
