I thought it would be interested to run a poll, maybe on Twitter or maybe on Project Sidewalk, to see which cities people were interested in us deploying to next.

I would have to go back through my emails to determine exactly who has contacted us in the past about PS deployments, but the list includes the following (checkboxes indicate that we've deployed there):

  • Austin, Texas (initial email from Darren Bates and then an independent follow-up from Juanita Webber, an ADA Compliance Program Officer for the Texas DOT)
  • Newberg, OR
  • Some city in Pennsylvania, I think?
  • Los Alamos, NM (Reid) Extend to Los Alamos, NM #1379
  • Virginia - not any specific city (email from Fionnuala Quinn)
  • San Antonio, TX (email from Prof. Bill Barker)
  • Mexico City, MX: (Edgar Martinez and team start with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azcapotzalco)
  • Paris, France (need to dig up contact info)
  • New York City, New York (email from Benjamin Kallos)
  • City of Boston's Public Works Department (email from Devin de Hueck on Mar 23rd 2019)
  • Saskatoon, SK, Canada. (we were contacted by someone in Canada, I think Saskatoon). We used this city in our Tohme dataset. I just quickly walked through the city and there lots of missing curb ramps (just like in 2014).
  • Indianapolis, IN (contacted by Gretchen Zortman in the Mayor's office; contacted again Jul 2022 by the Samuel Ryn in the Department of Public Works)
  • Columbus, OH (contacted by Dean Allemang; Mikey's been handling)
  • Pittsburgh, PA (Cole Gleason--PhD student in HCII at CMU) Possible new city: Pittsburgh? #1626
  • Atlanta, GA (Tracy Janov at PEDS, and now Rob at atlantaneighbors@gmail.com on Jul 15 2020, not sure if an individual or org)
  • Oakland, CA (Anh Nguyen, @wheelieplanner on Twitter: "This is a really cool and helpful tool. I noticed it has expanded into other cities beyond Seattle. How can other cities join? I work in Oakland and would like to see something like this there.")
  • Seattle, WA (have had lots of conversations with folks since moving from UMD to UW, including SDOT--see Seattle Deployment Cross-Reference Dataset #1336. See also, this article in the Seattle Times on "Here’s what it’s like to get around Seattle for some people who use a wheelchair" from April 8, 2019)
  • Clark County, WA. Contacted by Darlene Sharar on Sep 23, 2019
  • Madison, WI. Contacted by John Krull on Dec 21, 2019
  • San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, Mexico: Contacted by Edgar Gutierrez González on Feb 17, 2020
  • Puebla, Mexico. Contacted by Claudia Orea on Jun 9th 2020
  • Baltimore, MD. Contacted by Bonnie Swenor and Cory Warren in Aug 2021. See https://www.baltimorebrew.com/2021/06/25/fed-up-with-baltimores-non-compliance-with-the-ada-wheelchair-users-sue/

  • Teaneck, NJ by Dr. Florian Thomas May 2023
  • City of Richmond and Burnaby, Canada by Delphine Labbe June 2023
  • City of Gainesville, FL by Ryan Lester Oct 2023
  • St. Louis, MO by Bryce Monser Mar 2024
  • Bodø, Norway by Manuela Aguirre Ulloa Mar 2024
  • ...

In selecting next cities for deployment, I want to consider: geographic diversity, city size, and whether we have a local advocate (ideally in government but could also be a citizen)

For the RFP I'm currently writing for, they want a focus on the Pacific Northwest including Alaska. I just checked out Juneau, which is beautiful (and fun to explore!), but also has some clear accessibility issues and is a small town. I also have family there (and possibly some connections to local government). One downside, however, is it looks like it's only been driven through three times: in 2007, in 2009, and in 2011.

I'm closing this since it isn't an open issue to be addressed. we can continue to use it as a place to list cities that have contacted us about deploying there!
