Short answer: no, such code would be harder to make and are not more powerful.

Short answer: There is a two way interplay. QEC researchers try to develop codes that match available hardware. If you have physical long range interactions, then there are codes that require fewer qubits. Vice versa when a particular code looks especially promising, such as the surface code, this motivates hardware research to build devices optimized to implement the code.
