I don't know if this is because I have a LOT of tabs open, or a long browsing history, or what, but when I click on the address bar and try to edit it or type into it, I often find myself having a wait a long time while it apparently "thinks"...looking for matches to offer me as typing completion suggestions, I assume. This becomes really really painful at times. It is really becoming a major usability issue for me.

Application version 1.6.4
WebKit version 537.21
Windows 7 x64

This is fixed in current master.
For now, you can try removing old history and disabling inline domain completion.

I assume this is in 1.6.6 now. I think I disabled the inline completion and would like to try enabling it again....but cannot find it. Has it moved in the preferences or been removed?

No, it's not in 1.6.6.
The option is still there (Preferences -> Tabs -> LocationBar behavior -> Enable inline domain completion - it's first checkbox).
