Accessing the BRIRs

Shanon Pearce edited this page Sep 12, 2022 · 22 revisions

The BRIRs in this dataset can be used to create virtual surround sound on headphones through BRIR convolution. This requires IR Convolution software that supports true stereo processing such as Equalizer APO. Configurations for Equalizer APO are provided for each room in the dataset and for a range of common speaker configurations. Custom configurations can also be built by convolving with BRIRs corresponding to the desired source angles or positions within a room. Refer to the naming convention below to locate individual BRIRs within the dataset.

Naming convention

The BRIR file names follow the naming convention below.

BRIR_<Room_ID>_<Position_ID>_<Elevation>_<Azimuth>.WAV

Field Range Description
Room_ID From R01 to R39 Room ID number sorted by date added to the dataset. Refer to the Room Information page for room names and room IDs.
Position_ID From P1 to P3 The ID number of each set of source and listener positions. Some rooms include multiple positional configurations. Refer to the Measurement Setups page for more information.
Elevation E0 Elevation angle between source and listener in degrees. 0 corresponds to a point at the same level as the listener.
Azimuth From A-179 to A180 Azimuth angle between the source and listener in degrees. Refer to the coordinate system below.

Alternative BRIRs

A set of alternative BRIRs with reduced reverberation times are provided for a selection of rooms from the dataset including: R05B (Audio Lab), R08 (room spirit), R19 (coupled rooms), R20 (Seminar Room RWTH Aachen), R21(Chamber Music Hall), and R22 (large room). The approximate RT60 reverberation times for this set of BRIRs range from 350ms to 400ms.

The alternative BRIRs can be identified by the modified naming convention:

BRIR_<Room_ID>_<RT60>_<Position_ID>_<Elevation>_<Azimuth>.WAV

Coordinate System

The azimuth angles between the source and the listener’s head follow the coordinate system shown in the diagram below. An azimuth of -90 corresponds to a point directly to the left of the listener while an azimuth of 90 corresponds to a point directly to the right of the listener.

Format

The BRIRs are provided as 2 channel WAV files with a sampling rate of 44100Hz and a bit depth of 24 bits per sample.
