Currently, Stellarium release assets include source code archives, one prepared by the release engineers and another being automatically generated tarball by GitHub. They both are .tar.gz files of roughly the same size.

As the project had grown in recent years, I think it would make sense to use more efficient compression for hand-generated source distfile, because duplicating essentially the same tarball provided by GitHub looks redundant. Consider the following numbers:

318M stellarium-1.1.1.tar.lz (lzip -9)
369M stellarium-1.1.1.tar.bz2 (bzip2 -9)
395M stellarium-1.1.1.tar.gz (original)
