Outline

This session introduces the concepts of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), alongside web-presentation of 3D models, as the main methods of disseminating and experiencing 3D representations of cultural heritage and historical materials. We discuss some technical definitions and hardware, issues around VR as a research and publication tool, and ethical questions in the use of VR in cultural heritage. We end with a brief tutorial around the 3D publication site SketchFab, and suggested practical exercise for students to think through the questions we raise in this session.
