A long list of linux utilities

where pkg means corresponding package in debian

APT/DPKG

  1. dpkg -L lists package contents
  2. dpkg -S searchs to which package a file belongs

Archive Utilities

  1. lsar lists archive contents, pkg unar
  2. unar extracts contents from archive, pkg unar
  3. genisoimage for generating iso files, pkg genisoimage, instead of mkisofs.
  4. cdrecord
  5. rar, unrar, p7zip, p7zip-rar
  6. rename

rename ’s/.rm$/.rmvb/’ *
rename ‘tr/A-Z/a-z/’ *

Debian specific

  1. update-alternatives
