Welcome to the EPA Metadata Editor v3.2.1 wiki!

The EME is a simple geospatial metadata editor that allows users to create and edit records that meet EPA and Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata requirements.

The EME is one of the only FGDC metadata editors that runs in ArcGIS 10 and higher. It can be used as an ArcGIS extension or as a standalone tool and provides ArcGIS users with FGDC synchronization capabilities.

Metadata records created and edited with the EME are fully compatible with the Environmental Dataset Gateway. The EDG is a web-based metadata portal that enables data consumers to discover, view, and access geospatial and non-geospatial resources (e.g. data, documents, services, and applications) made available by EPA's Program Offices, Regions, and Research Laboratories.

In the ongoing effort to bridge the gap between metadata schemas and to satisfy immediate compliancy requirements, EPA has released EME v3.2.1 for EPA and federal partner use. EME v3.2.1 is an interim tool that is designed for users to edit existing FGDC metadata records (and create new records) so that they comply with OMB’s Project Open Data v1.1 (POD) schema. EMEv3.2.1 creates metadata that complies with Project Open Data standards for mandatory metadata fields and provides a best effort at complying with standards for optional fields. EME v3.2.1 contains updates to the following metadata elements to ensure POD compliance:

  • Publisher
  • Online Linkages
  • Dataset Constraints: Access
  • Dataset Constraints: Security Classification
  • Distribution Contact
  • Distribution Liability

Documentation regarding many of these updates as well as additional documentation for other metadata elements may be found in the revised EME v3.2.1 Help that accompanies the application.
