Building Pen from Source

The following instructions assume the the build host is "pristine" and therefore includes operating system specific hints on setting up the build tools.

Several distributions have well maintained Pen packages, which may make building from source unnecessary.

The following instructions assume that the source archive has already been downloaded. Tarballs are available here:
