In a better world, we would use an interface and allow the backend to be switched by the caller, but that would change the API which I don't think is wanted.

I tried to mirror the code style I've seen elsewhere in Epiworld, but if it's incorrect let know and I'll be happy to fix. Required by UofUEpiBio/epiworldweb.
