This makes the context clearer.

We've once thought about pinging a user once they've been unmuted. Still a good idea?

@Zirak I think so.

If they joined the room and acted abusive, then just stayed there for a week - I'm not sure I want to notify them they can be abusive again :) Mute duration should be short for users who have a chance to improve anyway imo.

If they are acting abusive to the point of not wanting them back, why let in in the first place?

Because we don't control that

I know. But if a user can be let back, trying to keep them out will not be very effective.

It's not trying to keep them out. It's just about not reminding them that
they can come troll again.

If you're a troll, I doubt you need a reminder that you can troll.

Imagine you're Steve McTrollinson who wandered in to the js room. You set fire to our children and rape our crops. We mute you for 30 days.

Scene: 30 days later. What happens?

Scenario A: We don't ping users when they're unmuted
You probably won't remember us.

Scenario B: You came back every day despite your mute, waiting for a time to strike.
Pinging you won't achieve anything.

Scenario C: You forgot about us and we pinged you.
Delighted at the opportunity, you come back to set fire to our water supplies and rape our houses.

There's of course Scenario C', wherein you're not a jerk any more. In light of this, I'd say that no pinging will be best.

Also, muting is our form of not letting someone come back, and so far it's shown to be moderately effective. But it's still meh to have the room in permanent gallery, and the topic of infinite bans has been discussed and disapproved (although you can mute someone for 99999999 hours...)

what about having an optional 2nd argument of duration. defaults to what ever it defaults to, but we can mute for crazy lengths if we wanted? (repeat offenders for example)

That's the system now, except the 2nd argument is required since we couldn't agree on a default length.

Muting for crazy lengths is ineffective compared to the alternative (pinging a mod after 2 mutes)

can we have an optional third argument for reason ???
!!mute 1234567 2h was vamping and ignored warnings to stop ? then I am not forced to go digging in a transcript for why the user was muted.

The no-op version !!mute shows a list of muted users. Each one is a link to which message invoked the ban. And when you're muting a user, you probably want to explain yourself anyway.

Closed, muting's no longer a thing (kick-mute is now a chat feature).
