I'd like to suggest something about pull requests:
Create a branch and push changes to it, then create a pull request from it.
By this you can keep your default branch (master) in sync with upstream's master

Thanks for the advice! I use this method mostly for contribution to other repositories. Except that I use rebase instead of merge. :D
