Poliespellinglish (Poliespⱥlĭngglĭŝ)

Version of this document in Poliespellinglish

About

Poliespellinglish (Poliespo spelling of English) is an alternative spelling of English based on Poliespo orthography. It looks terrible, which I consider to be a goal achieved. I've tried to make English orthographies based on several conlangs, such as Esperanto and Vötgil, but this is by far the worst one, so it is my priority.

A Python file (main.py) to convert between English and Poliespellinglish is attached. It makes use of the API for tophonetics.com that I made. You can run the code at https://repl.it/@AJLee/poliespelling-of-english

Making orthography Unicode-friendly

The orthography of Poliespo is not very Unicode-friendly, because the characters t-with-overlapping-v for /ð/ and p-with-overlapping-w for /pʷ/ just don't exist. Hence, I have decided to make them ψ and φ, because they look ??kind of similar?? to the originals, and are both Greek letters so many fonts will support them.

ψ and φ look like t+v and p+w

Consonants

All the English consonants are in Poliespo, except /ŋ/ which I have converted to ng because that appears to sort of work in Esperanto, so that is pretty simple to transfer over. Glottal stops are ignored.

Consonant table

Vowels

For the vowels, I have snapped them to the nearest Poliespo one based on my discretion (which mainly involved listening to the vowel sounds and then picking arbitrarily).

Miscellaneous changes

After phoneme-by-phoneme conversion, the following conversions are done:

  1. kts → ẑ
  2. gdz → z̆
  3. ts → c
  4. hm → m̆
  5. hn → n̆
  6. hb → b̆
  7. hk → k̆
  8. pŭ → φ

In addition, ː is changed to :, as that is done for /iː/ and /ɪː/ in Poliespo.

The following are done to get rid of some vowel clusters:

  1. [vowel][i or ĭ] → [vowel]j
  2. [vowel]u → [vowel]ŭ
