I greatly enjoy *Edge*’s annual question, posed to a variety of top minds (skewing heavily academic). [This year’s](http://edge.org/q2007/q07_index.html) – what are you optimistic about? – is no exception. Of the many answers, brilliant and tedious alike, two in conjunction stood out for me as reasons to be hopeful about the future.

The first [response](http://edge.org/q2007/q07_3.html#enriquez) that really spoke to me was from Juan Enriquez, CEO, scholar, and author. Enriquez argues that a networked global economy will break down poverty, discrimination, and similar ills. A strong excerpt:

[Ciao Bella](http://www.ciaobellagelato.com/) brand gelato has become a fixture of our freezer over the last several months. I am here to recommend it whole-heartedly, unsponsored and unabashed.

We first tried their coconut, which has more of a sorbet texture than one would expect of gelato. It’s become our mainstay desert. Their green tea with white chocolate is also a good bet, though the green tea would stand alone just as well. Hazelnut is a bit gritty.

The New York Times has an interesting [article](http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/03/technology/03google.html) today about Google’s hiring practices. In a nutshell, Google is beginning to account for applicant traits beyond raw academic performance: unique experiences and accomplishments, personality quirks, working habits. Beyond that, Google is attempting to evaluate the success of potential hires algorithmically. It sounds like a sort of [eHarmony](http://www.eharmony.com) for the workforce, and decidedly more granular than their renowned low-pass filter for grades and test scores.

Ever since it became every computer science graduate’s dream to work at Google, friends and family have asked me why I wasn’t interested in the search giant. My answer was that I didn’t think I was what Google was looking for. I did not perform well across the board academically in high school and college; my grades in math, particularly, were quite poor for someone with a facility in programming. Beyond that, I don’t test well (outside of humanities subjects, anyway). I don’t enjoy the sort of brain teasers and obscure trivia challenges that Google’s interview process is infamous for. My brain seems to be wired to function optimally only when solving real-world problems; contrived scenarios leave me slack-jawed. So I’d shake my head when people asked why I wasn’t hustling to work there: “I’m not their type of geek.”

Steve Dekorte [writes about](http://www.dekorte.com/blog/blog.cgi?do=item&id=2403) atheism versus agnosticism:

> “I personally don’t like the word agnostic because we don’t use similar words to make distinctions about certainty when it comes to matters outside of religion – so using a special word for uncertainty on matters of religion seems to grant it some special status which I don’t feel it deserves. After all, many people who are religious have doubts, but do they call themselves agnostics?”

So the [iPhone](http://www.apple.com/iphone/) is probably going to be [closed to third-party applications](http://www.tuaw.com/2007/01/09/iphone-will-not-allow-user-installable-applications/). p. Thats not good. [Merlin Mann talks about why](http://www.43folders.com/2007/01/11/osx-app-developers-iphone/:bq).

There’s the potential here for some serious George Jetson shit and it would be a pity not to capitalize on that as early as possible.

When I was doing my [talk on Rails security](http://static.al3x.net/securing_rails.pdf) at RailsConf Europe I joked about delivering a magical plugin, `acts_as_impenetrable`, that solved all of your security needs. There’s still no magic bullet for security, but I’d like to contribute a smidge of code that brings us a step closer.

Rails has the ability to mitigate [cross-site scripting attacks](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-site_scripting) in the form of its [ActionView::Helpers::TextHelpers\#sanitize](http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionView/Helpers/TextHelper.html#M000516) method. This method won’t catch every clever XSS out there, but it sure helps. Sadly, `sanitize` is unavailable by default from your models and controllers; the expected usage pattern is that you’ll handle sanitization in your view, ex: `<%= sanitize(`story.title) \>@ or `<%=h `story.body\>@.

It’s been nice to see that there’s some interest in Acts As Sanitized.

[John Nunemaker](http://addictedtonew.com/) referred me to the [White List](http://svn.techno-weenie.net/projects/plugins/white_list/) plugin by [Rick Olsen](http://techno-weenie.net/), which seeks to solve a similar problem but for views, not models. Rick himself then mentioned that the `sanitize` method passes only a fraction of the test cases that he’s adapted from Rsnake’s [XSS Cheat Sheet](http://ha.ckers.org/xss.html), something I’m well aware of.

In order of viewing.

[Children of Men](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206634/) is not a science fiction film. It’s not about the future, and its not about what life on earth would be like if the human species went sterile. Its a film about war, and about right now. The metaphor of a world without children that is, a world without a future is devastating. I found it hard to watch and harder to look away.

I’ve got a full-blown [Twitter](http://www.twitter.com/) addiction. There are plenty of ways to get my fix throughout the day: RSS, IM, SMS, [Twitterriffc](http://iconfactory.com/software/twitterrific), or just looking at the dang site itself.

But I’m also addicted to [Growl](http://growl.info/), the global notification system for Mac OS X (that Apple *should* be shipping with Leopard, cough). Throughout the day I have all sorts of data pouring across the bottom of my screen thanks to Growl, from incoming emails to IM status messages to completed downloads. SXSWi has come recommended to me for some time, but the wishy-washy content of many of the panels and keynotes never sold me. Over the years I’ve realized that what everyone says about conferences is true: its not about the content, its about the conversations between talks.

I just registered for [RailsConf 2007](http://conferences.oreillynet.com/rails/) after some internal debate about whether or not to attend.

Ultimately, my decision was, as with [SXSWi](http://2007.sxsw.com/interactive/), a social one. There are tons of interesting people in the Rails community attending that I’ve corresponded with, or read, or used code from. The opportunity to chat, kick around ideas, and buy much-deserved drinks is just too good to pass up.

The information floodgates surrounding [SXSW](http://www.sxsw.com/) seem to have finally opened. Posts are frequently on [SXSW Baby](http://www.sxswbaby.com/) and every other blogger in my feed reader is mentioning their travel plans for Austin. Its exciting, no doubt.

Probably the weakest information resource surrounding SXSW is the official site itself. Given that the interactive portion of the conference plays host to some of the worlds top designers and information architects, you’d think they could put together a calendar of panels thats remotely readable. The disjointed offerings in the [SXSW Toolbox](http://2007.sxsw.com/toolbox/) are little help. The [registrant directory](http://2007.sxsw.com/toolbox/reg_directory/) looks so broken and user-hostile in Safari that I popped over to Firefox just to double-check that it wasn’t a rendering issue. No, it isn’t. It just looks like My First Rails App. Yikes.

The logistics are basically fine. Even the wi-fi works most of the time. The conference center is somewhat confusing to navigate, but justifies/makes up for it in sheer immenseness. Even the most crowded talks have still had comfortable standing room.

I can navigate through some parts of the city, but far more of it is either hazy might-have-seens or pure mystery to me. I won’t, then, try to hold forth on geographic generalities and which neighborhood can beat up which other neighborhood’s dad. I lived in Hayes Valley when I first moved here because it’s charming and has a good comic book store.
