Thanks for the patch. LGTM.

When you say the controlled shutdown keeps timing out, do you mean the leaders can't be moved off the shutdown broker after all the retries? Were the replicas in-sync when the controlled shutdown was initiated?

AFAIK, replicas were in-sync when shutdown was initiated.

The logs said: WARN [Kafka Server 2], Error during controlled shutdown, possibly because leader movement took longer than the configured socket.timeout.ms: Connection to Node(2, chens-mbp, 9093) failed (kafka.server.KafkaServer)

I didn't find any other errors (in server, controller or statechange logs)
