Use more specific icons for launch-mode indicator #127
Conversation
The current icon is nebulous, and communicates very little to the reader other than "something is different; check the tooltip to find out what." This commit changes the launch-mode icon to use a safety jacket for safe mode, and a microscope for dev mode. A beaker would have been preferred, but it wasn't added until Octicons v3.0.0 (Atom's bundled with v2.1.2).

👍 I think this is a good change, but I'm not sure why the jersey === safe mode |
What about lock for safe mode? |
👍 Yeah, I like that too: Then for "dev mode", here a couple options I can think of: 1.

Erh, is this not what the jacket icon is meant to resemble...? If not, then what on Earth is it doing there? :D Ah well, if it isn't obvious to more than one person, it's clearly the wrong choice. As for the padlock, well, I associate it with restrictions or imprisonment. Even if that's a little relevant as far as packages are concerned, it doesn't look too comforting. How about a shield instead? (On mobile right now, so I can't mock anything up). Regarding the dev mode icon... eh, neither really makes as much sense as the beaker icon. Which is off limits, since off the Octicons version Atom uses How about spinning off a fork of Octicons v2.1 and developing that separately? You could call it "Atomicons", and we'd be free to add new icons without worrying about Octicons' version history. |
Yep, that would be even better.
I think on github.com, the "jacket" is used for the teams tab. It should resemble a basketball jersey.
Yes, was thinking the same. See atom/atom#8314 (comment). "Atomicons" would be great name. 👌 |
+1 for safe mode |
I vote for Atomicons, if just for the name alone. |
If atom/atom#13138 gets merged,
Edit: Dev Mode could also be blue. Looks less like an error and matches the blue dock icon: |
This doesn't tell me much:
This, on the other hand, I find to be much more informative:
Safe mode
Dev mode
I would've preferred using the beaker icon for dev mode, but it seems it was only added to Octicons after v2.1.2 (the version Atom's bundled with).
