We should add support for hidden assets - i.e. assets that are by default not shown in the GUI. The proposal is to use the leading dot convention form unix, i.e. .foo.txt wouldn't be shown in the asset tag by default. There should be some option to temporarily show hidden assets in the GUI.

Side note: what I really want is to implement #367, #2713 (and #2714) and this would be a prerequisite
