I also had issues with installing the backup gem on a brand new Ubuntu 14.04 with ruby 2.3.1 node. All required dependencies for nokogiri were in place so one of the first things I tried (from experience) was updating nokogiri which worked fine. It doesn't look like it will break anyhting besides dropping support for ruby 1.8.7, but the backup gem has dropped support for that since v4.
