Testing this wunderfull piece of software #62
Comments
Ok with the network-manager from git: [15702.259665] rtl8192se: switch case 0x5e not processed 12:3d:0a:02:ca:ec is the macaddress of the DYON after wifi-setup |
I recently got reports of crashes with on Fedora 32 (rawhide) in some test environments. It could well be that those are related, will report back once I have looked into them. The socket in this case means waiting for the TV to connect to the PC (i.e. the TCP/IP socket for the RTSP control stream). It could be as simple as a firewall rule blocking the connection. |
There is no firewall between. There is only the rtl-wifi-card and the Dyon in the same room.
|
What happens with WiFi Direct is that your laptop will open a new network (and share your internet connection). Almost as if you are running a hotspot while a normal device connects to you. In most cases, your laptop should be the group owner, and will be providing a network (this is Hmmm, maybe in this case your computer became a client rather than the group owner. And that for some reason the TV isn't able to cope with that and doesn't manage to establish the connection. Is the log really complete? |
I am primarily testing on Fedora 30 right now (will move to F31 soon). And the software uses parts of NetworkManager that were written primarily for its use and may not be as well tested as other parts. It basically is NetworkManager + wpa_supplicant + gstreamer (and various modules there). One thing that confuses me is the first log. It kind of looks like the stream is running just fine, but then NetworkManager thinks that the remote device disappeared, causing a disconnect. |
In short: At least now it is clear to me why the NetworkManager crashes sometimes and sometimes not. Whenever p2p_find is still running, the network manager continues to run without crashing. But it can't establish a connection because it doesn't notice or knows that p2p_find is already running. But if he establishes the connection, he crashes after a while. At least now I can consciously repeat the process of crashing and it works like this. Killing all processes that are involved and starting from zero causes a crash. The network manager restarts itself after a crash, but apparently doesn't know anything about the still running p2p-find at wpasupplicant. Crashed but then no longer, but the stream will not be built. |
BTW: Is it possible to set a "--debug" switch on the command line for future debugging? gdb gnome-network-displays is not very meaningful and maybe I was just too stupid to hand over the environment to gdb. run --debug doesn't work then and didn't set the variable afterwards. I have to think about it every time and woe betide you write G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=ALL, it all has to be small. If the program itself would set its debug variables, then such errors don't happen. G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all works G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=ALL didn't work. |
Perhaps something like that /* Set up gettext translations / ctx = g_option_context_new ("-network-displays"); /* End params */ gst_init (&argc, &argv); /*
/*
/*
return ret; |
In general you can just run |
Btw. you keep pasting log messages, please put them into code blocks, otherwise they are unreadable :) |
|

Without G_DEBUG=fatal-criticals

NetworkManager from the git today is stable and do this during the above:
|
Except for multiline you need three backticks :) Also, your pastes from journalctl or what it is are lacking newlines for some reason. A bit odd (easy to fix though). |
Ah, no, scratch that. The newlines are there (they were not in some earlier log) |
Second try try
and the screen freeze status wpa_cli
NetworkManager
|
Depending on how the connection to pulseaudio fails, the error may already reported for the pa_context_connect call. In that case the init_task will bet set to NULL, so add a check for that to prevent a critical warning. See #62
OK, one issue down (the critical warning for pulseaudio). Could we try splitting this into multiple issues? This is getting a bit of a mess; I think we have at least two more bugs here right now … |
Currently the UI would try to continue even if streaming could not be started. This caused assertion failures later on. Note that there must be some other issue that causes the NdSink to not be reset to the disconnected state. See #62
pulseaudio commit compiles fine - end run - ok I check out again
|
You need to use three backticks, on their own line :) The last bug should be fixed already by the later commit |
Well, he's not crashing. But then he stops working. On the other console, enter wpa_cli status and the wifi connection would still be there. I didn't have network manager running in the debugger during this attempt. But I didn't get any crashes from any program. Who's going to intervene that he doesn't just keep streaming? |
Since the gnome-network-displays does not crash but remains in the "error" status, the connection remains stable. The screen of the DYON is black and probably waiting for the stream. Whoever gave the 192.168.17.1 to the Dyon and the 192.168.17.2 to the streaming client, also a nmap is possible. Unfortunately I have no idea how to send a stream to the screen in this state. |
|
That "just" means that something is wrong with the pulseaudio connection. I have no idea what that might be though, it could even be that PA is crashing. Logs from PA might help.
If anything, you could run the following script to get a packetdump from the p2p device. Something like the following should do the trick (with
|
Local from foxconn the error is not repeatable
I don't know what that is, but the stream now starts locally like SSH and just stops. At first everything looks good on the network screen - it doesn't stay black anymore but streams the screen content. I don't think that's due to gnome-network-displays either. Something is not holding up the connection even though it has been set up correctly. "Got state change notification from streaming sink to state ND_SINK_STATE_DISCONNECTED" heaven knows why. |
I am pretty sure I know why, which is a weird issue and the device might be violating the WiFi Direct spec (or we are relying on something that is not standardized). Maybe we think that the device disappears and therefore disconnect from it. Could you run |
In the meantime I'm at 5 seconds, the effect always stays the same no matter what time I set. In the network manager the connection is then disconnected according to nmcli m and that's it. |
I'm thinking about whether keep-alive doesn't work because the dyon changes its Mac address after the successful p2p connection. It finds the TV with the Mac address |
Changing the MAC is a completely normal behaviour with WiFi-Direct. The earlier suspicion that I had was that NetworkManager/wpa_supplicant think that the peer is gone and then disconnect (in NM terms, in WiFi terms the P2P Group is closed). That might be the case, I am unsure about the best way to check this though (in theory it is trivial, but I need to find a good command to do it). |
Okay, then I'll be back to the same point before I knew your software. <3>WPS-AP-AVAILABLE-PBC Only that your software is fast enough to stream something until idle, that I see that the connection would be ok in principle, only that is possibly a matter of the network adapter. Such a USB WLAN adapter costs just 20 to 30 Euro - I would have to know one that can handle p2p under Linux, then I get it. |
Thought I'd buy a wifi adapter and promptly make a mistake. |
Hm, good question. I don't know of any good resource where to find that kind of information unfortunately. |
Found a table https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Category:Linux_driver/802dot11 |
I had another look at the dump you provided. It looks like the TV forces to be Group Owner (rather than the Computer becoming the GO). I am kind of guessing we are dealing with a bug in the NetworkManager P2P implementation where the connection fails after a while when we are a client rather than the GO. That could result in random failures for some people while for others it never/always works. The only thing that is clear to me right now is that the computer sends a DEAUTHENTICATION frame voluntarily. There is nothing in the dump that suggests there is a reason that this would make sense (and yeah, I could have realised this earlier). And, this does not look hardware related (i.e. not the wifi driver/card). Maybe this is something as simple/stupid as NM disconnecting because it fails to verify the connection for some reason? Did you actually enable debug information in NetworkManager with the log above? I think it would help if you run
or even
And then try to connect again. That should give a lot more information, maybe allowing us to pinpoint why NM decides to disconnect. Then attach the full network manager log here. |
This p2p stuff is really tricky. I exchanged the USB-Stick today and now I have a TP-Link TL WN821N Version 6 with 8192eu driver - the one provided by TP-Link doesn't work either, the one provided by mange on github can't have a p2p but it had to be this one https://github.com/clnhub/rtl8192eu-linux Gerade eben vor ein paar Sekunden zum laufen gebracht und da hatte ich wpa_cli offen
I hadn't read your message then. So nmcli g logging level trace not tried yet.
and a wpa1.conf file

Oh that I forgot to mention now, this is not the software on the Foxconn now but runs under an Ubuntu 18.04 and I learned today |
|
Ok, apart from the fact that the group formation doesn't work, I notice an unpleasant behavior when two wlan adapters are managed by the NetworkManager and gnome-network-displays are running. After blown his nose, he also kills the other wlan connection and it starts a cheerful flipflop. This is not good for later practice, because if you do Internet over one Wlan adapter and Network displays over the other, then it should not kill the Internet connection. By disconnecting the USB stick I calm down the network manager again, but this is not necessarily the solution now. |
No, there were no changes on the NM side. Looks like we are failing in the You should probably remove the stray |
Okay, this has nothing to do with your software, but WLAN under Linux has seen the devil. The TP-Link had an ath9k in version 1 but the Realtek 8192eu in version 6 - the driver is bad. Is not supported by Larry Finger and has quirks. The connection is established exactly once correctly, then you have to unload and load the driver again. After that every connection attempt beats with "Association request to the driver failed". |

from here he is gone and go back to the old connections

Ok thought I'd throw the dnsmasq on another port. On the same machine there is also an ISC-bind running, which of course can't bind to 53. port 5353 given to it in /etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d/port.conf to eat. The Dnsmasq messages are gone. otherwise the log looks the same. |
with trace - there was before a connectivity-check from ubuntu - but the connection doesn't go into the internet, that's total nonsense to ping a Ubuntu domain there. But that alone is probably not it. After that is turned off, he absolutely wants to make a DNS on the connection. I'm afraid the TV won't give him an answer. |
JFTR I am sure that gnome-network-displays will work with many devices. The DYON TV here is probably a special case. The ScreencastApp on the device feels responsible for the IP address and probably assigns it exactly once. If this is deleted, the connection is aborted. If I simply disconnect the program after the Wifi-Direct connection of gnome-network-displays before it starts streaming, I have noticed that the WIFI connection is still there. IP address still present. The connection is then stable and a nmap on the TV is also possible. If I let the program continue running, then either network manager or networkdisplays interrupts the connection by deleting the IP address. Also here with a Control C somewhere, I could notice that the Wifi connection is probably not interrupted by wpa_supplicant, but wpa_supplicant does this probably on request of the NetworkManager then. In other words, the wifi direct connection itself is, provided that the hardware driver fits there. That's good. |
That's the part I mean when I get the code right. |
Hmm, it can't be that, actually. The last message is
So it's gotta be there somewhere:
|
gnome-network-displays/src/wfd/wfd-media.c: g_debug ("WfdMedia: Finalize"); |
Okay, for me, so I don't forget where I've been. I hang on to the "state" of the connection. Because of all the trying, the device had an IP address and could stream. The IP address didn't come through the network manager or through gnome-network-displays. In my configuration under Ubuntu the network manager doesn't feel responsible for wifi-p2p, that's what I got used to in /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf by unmanaged-devices= Interestingly, REALTEK writes about this in its driver documentation at Miracast: "Step 5: Get the IP address for peer Miracast device |
In principle it should work, but the combination of software and hardware is probably not that easy. The successful streaming test for a few minutes was traceable via Unity on Ubuntu 18.04 as client and a Debian server bullseye on which the software with the hardware ran via ssh -Y - the strange thing is now that I can do it on the Debian server itself where the hardware can p2p - the Ubuntu client has a Realtek which does not support p2p, the streaming doesn't get running. Also under Gnome not on the Ubuntuclient it does not run, but funny enough under unity. A successful session before it crashes looks like this under Unity:

Arnold
