Images missing/won't render in Brave News

Steps to reproduce

1. install 1.39.22 on either Android or desktop
2. launch Brave
3. opt-in to Brave News via Settings -> Brave News -> Show Brave News
4. click on the X on the top right
5. swipe down

Actual result

No images render
