Hello Brian,
as discussed by email, here's a clone of the 'nl' utility (line numbering filter).

• Unfortunately, I've not been able to test it with perl 5.8 (I couldn't install it).
• I've added a non-standard option "-b eEXPR", similar to "-b pEXPR", but to exclude lines matching EXPR pattern from numbering.
• The usage/pod is my own words, and has a much lower quality than the BSD/GNU nl manuals. I didn't dare copy those, since I'm not sure about license/copyright matters.
