Rationale:

  • SVG looks better on mobile devices with high pixel density
  • SVG file size is smaller

maybe it's bad for old ie's

If they're using GitHub on IE8, SVGs are the least of their worries.

the data shows svg in <img> gets supported after ie9, doesn't it?
btw: i found an interesting thing: http://lynn.ru/examples/svg/en.html

I'm really not worried about how the build status image displays on older versions of IE ;) - svg it is!
