I gave permission but released is false.

When I approved, I looked in the admin and the presenter was assigned to a user who's name displayed as an empty string. To make the name appear i created a new presentor.

As an admin, you're able to edit the presenter objects also.

Oh weird, is it a problem with github integration? I signed in with github to submit a talk.

Sure sounds like it. Seems the github oauth isn't sending or we are not grabbing a useful display name.
