this seems wrong? Why did you replace the Japanese character by "and" here?
obviously the changes where you replaced English terms are fine--could you confirm that the changes you made to Japanese terms are clearly improvements, not just alternatives? |
Hi, Thanks for your email. I am Shoji Takahashi, working at Elsevier Japan. As you may know, Mendeley is part of Elsevier since last year. I have started to create a Japanese citation style called SIST02 for Mendeley with the advice from Carles Pina working at Mendeley. I haven’t looked at other Japanese citation styles in detail, but I can safely say that it’s very unlikely that “and” and “from” need to be translated as “と” or “から” respectively. “and” will not be translated in any Japanese and just be replaced with a comma or semicolon in most Japanese citation styles. For “from”, I am not less confident, but I was not able to think of any scenarios where this particular word needs to be translated into this Japanese. With the above background, it is OK to leave the translations for “and” and “from” as the original Japanese. But I thought it might be a good idea to clean up the file (i.e. to put “and” and “from” to the original English). This is my first time to update a file on GitHub. Let me know if you have any further questions. Best regards, Shoji Shoji Takahashi |
@shojitakahashi: You have probably already seen it, but just in case: there is an MLZ implementation of SIST02 with demo pages. Let's keep the Japanese versions of "and" and "from". (Other styles may not use "and", but some do use "=" to join two authors. It would be implemented with a style override anyway, but we may as well provide translations as a starting point.) |
Hi Frank,
Thanks for your e-mail. This is perfectly fine with me. As you may already have seen from my answer to Sebastian Karcher, I don’t have a strong reason to change the translations for “and” and “from”. I am new to the GitHub community. I agree that no changes should be made to the existing files unless there are clear reasons to change them. For other changes I made to the locale file, I tried to make it as compatible as with SIST02. As you know, keeping the Japanese locale file is not as simple as keeping English and other European language local files. For example, some Japanese citations styles may want to translate “et al.” as “ほか” but others may want to translate it as “他”. But this time, I changed the translation of “et al.” from “他” to “ほか” because “ほか” is what SIST02 prefers. I hope you agree this approach (giving priority to SIST02 preferences) is reasonable. Do I have to do anything additional now (e.g. submit my change request once again without changes to “and” or “from”)? Or can I leave the rest to your community?
Yes! I have just finished creating the SIST02 style for Mendeley and I am going to send it to Carles Pina. Your pages are great! I always referred to your pages when I was creating the style. Best regards, Shoji |
It all looks fine to me otherwise. Terms that vary can be overridden in the individual styles that require a variant, so unless there is a large population of local users for a generic style like Chicago (which I'm pretty sure is not the case in Japan), small stylistic changes shouldn't cause any problems. |

Thanks. I changed the translations for “and” and “from” back to English. |
Great, thanks! |
