I think we need to:

  • Uncomment the top lines of pyproject.toml, so that meson becomes the default build system. For now, we'll leave the setup.py files in place so that if someone wants to build with distutils they easily can.
  • Add a few more lines with metadata to pyproject.toml
  • Update the docs to tell people that for editable installs they should use the flag --no-build-isolation.

I'll issue a PR that includes the first two in a few minutes.
