Update PR branch with latest changes

What is the preferred workflow to update a branch created with gh pr checkout XXXX with the latest changes? So assuming I have already checked out this branch locally, and the person making the PR has pushed some changes – how do I update my local branch? I tried using git pull, but I get a warning message (and updates are not pulled in):

Your configuration specifies to merge with the ref 'refs/pull/9419/head' from the remote, but no such ref was fetched.

I think it is easiest to use git pull explicitly -- as in, git pull upstream main .

Thanks, I realized that my initial question was unclear – I meant pulling in changes from the upstream PR, which technically lives in some fork and not upstream.

@cbrnr A regular git pull should work!

1. First make sure you've updated to v1.11, since we fixed some gh pr checkout bugs there.
2. Then, use gh pr checkout and let it create a new local branch. If a local branch already exists and was created by an older gh version, delete it (unless it contains your unpushed work) and let gh recreate it.
3. If a regular git pull doesn't work to fetch new commits from the PR, please share with us any git config pertaining to the local branch (copy it over from .git/config) and your git remote setup. You may anonymize actual names of branches and repositories.

A regular git pull (without arguments) should work since version v1.11.
